Credit Card Dispute?

Hello, I am hoping somebody can help me with this. I have looked at my credit history and it shows a negative record that went to collections. This happened back in 2002, when I was 14! I don't believe this should affect my credit so drastically. I am hoping if anybody can give me advice as to how I should dispute it. I don't believe creditors are allowed to affect my credit if I'm under 18. If this is not true, please let me know. Thanks.

  1. You are responsible for your actions thus the record will stay for life. Being 14 is no reason why it won't affect your credit.
  2. ok yes you can dispute it . You can do this over the net . it should have something on the site and will tell you how to dispute . They will also be able to tell by your ssn and b day that it was put on before you turned 18 . I had 3 charges on my credit report that hit before i was 18. I disputed all of them and they got removed . Good luck .
  3. Each reporting agency has a place on their website giving you instructions on how to dispute it. By law they have 30 days to investigate the dispute. If they don't investigate it by that time, they have to remove it. If they have not, you will have to notify them they are in violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act and that you will report them to the FTC if they do not make the corrections. When they investigate, they have to contact the creditor for validation of the debt/account. It is also necessary for you to notify the creditor that you are disputing their report. Here's a site w/a sample letter of dispute and details on how to do it: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre21.shtm The FTC enforces the FTRA: http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/money/fair-credit/fair-crd.htm I suggest you send everything as "CERTIFIED, RETURN RECEIPT". That way someone has to sign for your letters and you will have proof it was received if they say they never received it.
  4. Call the three credit bureaus and they can remove it and they will being fourteen they shouldn't of extended you credit anyways.
  5. A 14 year old can not legally enter into a contract - any contract. Your parents could have used your name... (but shouldn't) But not you. Dispute it and the company that posted the mark has to produce proof. Most do not have on hand all paperwork going back more than a few years. Most archive it off site and do not want to deal with it after so long. Each state is a little different...
