I am disputing some erronneous charges on my credit card?

i have asked for my card activity to be suspended. Now, these are not my charges and I have no intention of paying them. also it angers me that I had one of the big 3 credit companies moniutoring my account and yet this happenned. I rarely use this card. The charges came form a place quitre distant from me. I have no idea how it occurred unless the credit card company made an error in recording the transactions. The card is AMEX. I know that if they request payment from me and I do not pay that my credir rating will be harmed. I currently have a very high credit rating So, besides hurting my credit rating, if I have to refure to pay, what else could happen?

1. There will be a big volume of correspondence, there will be collectors' visits, but if you are not to blame, stand your ground, eventually they will give up! (assuming you are not to blame!)
2. Unless you are talking about a huge sum of money, the worst that can happen is hurting your credit rating. If you're talking a large sum of money, AMEX may take you to court.
