How do I dispute?

I got some good answers on my previous question. Now, how do I go about disputing old accounts? I have found trying to contact credit reporting agencies to be incredibly frustrating. They tie you up in an automated phone system which goes in circles. I don't believe they are really at all interested in hearing from you if you have accounts to dispute. Trying to get to them online is even worse.

  1. It can be frustrating trying to work through these issues, particularly with credit agencies. However, the first point of contact with any dispute account should not be the credit agency, but the merchant/creditor. Once you have filed the dispute with the merchant, THEN you can write a letter to the credit agency stating that the account being reported as delinquent (or whatever) in fact has been disputed, and the credit agency should contact the merchant for more details.
