- pay all your debt on time.
- Pay off your debt.
- Get some breathing room between your credit limits and your debt load. One way to do this is obviously to pay it down. However, another way is to ask your credit card company to increase your limit. If you can handle this without using it, it lowers your percentage of debt load.
- I would advise you to get online and go to one of those "free credit report" websites because they should have tips like that on there.
- I have horrible credit myself and couldn't even get a credit card. However, I could buy a car at one of those buy here pay here places that does in house financing. I have the payment taken directly out of my checking account and I'm sure once I pay off my Cadillac, my credit will be somewhat ok. The interest rate sucks but it is well worth it to repair my credit. If I don't I will never be able to buy a home. Even try one of those rent a center places.
- Pay all of your bills promptly!
- may more than your minimum payment every time on time. Pull your credit and dispute anything that is inaccurate or questionable. Don't apply for credit for a while (inquiries can hurt your score). If you have old debt, consider just letting it drop off. Debt comes off your credit after 7 years of inactivity/your last payment, so if you're 5 or 6 years in, I'd let it drop. If you pay your collection accounts, you can try to settle it. Make sure they note it as "Paid" or "Paid as Agreed" Best defense against bad credit is education. grab a book, do some research and always be on top of your credit.
- I have been helping people do just this thing for years... all of this is good advice.... One thing that I see people do that they should never do is close old accounts that have great payment history..... you will loose the history of those accounts and your score can actually drop.... Another NO NO is to settle collection accounts or past due accounts that are older than 3 years..... what this does is bring them COLLECTION CURRENT or PAST DUE PAID CURRENT... if they are that old....let them go....your score will drop if you do this... Usually the only requirement you need to buy a car is if your breathing..... ....don't buy a car just to repair your credit.... Stay below 50% of your balance to your credit limit...for example if you have a limit of $1000 try to keep it below $500..... another way to do this is to contact your creditor and request to raise the credit limit WITHOUT pulling your credit.......A GREAT WEB SITE to go to for ALL OF your credit questions is www.myfico.com
