Best way to raise my credit score?

I had a bad spot where I couldnt work and was int he hospital for about 4 months didnt have health insurance, all my savings were wiped out trying to pay rent etc while not working, my car got repoed and I couldnt pay my credit cards..lost a lot in a short time along with my credit score, 2 years later still trying to pay off stuff , my credit is in the mid 500, and I cannot buy a car house or rent an apt even tho I am working and making payments, I need to raise my score to the national average of about 620 to rent an apt, whats the quickest, smartest way to approach this and are there any agencies out there that would be available to advise me without putting back me in the hole. I liked what rowdy said where/how do I get a read copy of my report, all my cards were cancelled, just got a secured m/c and making payments on time , a friend co-signed a carloan and I have made payments on time for the last 1.5 yrs hoping that should help

  1. Stop using your cards, setup a budget that your going to pay each month, start with the highest interest rate card and try to pay double the minimum and keep going from there, possibly get a co-signer for an apartment or car.
  2. First off go get a readout of your credit from the top three credit companies and find out if you have any multipule listings or wrong things on your credit sheet..you would be amazed how many peoples sheets are wrong, we found that one company had us listed three times with different amounts! We also found not one but two entries for a lien on property that was over $800 dollars that wasnt even ours! a lady with the same last name had skipped court on it...I had to write letters and got it all straightend up, that raised our score 150 points! Also pay off any little bills which will make it higher but make sure they took off any of the paid anythings..they also hadnt taken off one I paid..they usually dont look at medical as much as other stuff...if you dispute any charges put them all in writing and keep copies..hope it helps.
  3. to raise credit score 1. Always pay on time or ahead of time. 2. maintain low balances on credit cards 3. keep your total potential debt to earnings load low - If you have a card with a $15000 credit line, you may ask them to reduce it to something more realistic, like $5000. 4. I was told by an underwriter that having just two cards, a major credit card (VISA, MC) and a consumer card (Sears, best buy, etc...) is the best mix for revolving credit. 5. You should have a recent history of both installment or term (Car or house loans) and revolving credit. ------------------------------ http://www.bestcreditrates.net
