Should my father-in-law open three secured credit cards to improve his credit?

My father-in-law just paid $600 to a man who said he could help him clean up his credit and raise his credit score. The man said he would dispute some of the "false information" on his account, plus he told my father-in-law to open up three unsecured credit card accounts for $300 apiece. I don't like any of this. What can I tell him? My father-in-law who is 63 thinks the man knows what he's doing. And think he got ripped off.

  1. He got ripped!
  2. That's ridiculous advice. Your credit score is affected by your payment history, and is affected negatively by how many credit cards you have. And he can dispute any "false information" himself; all he has to do is write to the credit agency about the disputed information, providing evidence of why it's false.
  3. ripped off. only time and paying your bills on time cleans up your credit. you can do that yourself for free. no one or company can do that for you.
