Someone is piggybacking on my internet connection. How to stop it?

I have been having a very strong feeling lately that someone(or some people) has/ve been piggybacking on my internet connection. There has been music on my iTunes program that I KNOW I did not download, and I have been finding things in my recent web searches that I would have no reason to be inquiring about. Can someone give me a step by step on how I can stop this? Thank you...

  1. Don't you really mean someone is using your PC. Then put a password on your user account
  2. If you have an open wireless connection to the net then your neighbours can use your signal to access the internet, you need to make sure your connection is encrypted so that only you can use the connection, reconfigure your router to make it WAP enabled, read the instructions on how to do this, good luck !
  3. I think someone hacked in your computer. Try making your connection a security enabled network by setting your password on the IP address
  4. do you have a wireless network? as in, your modem hooked up to a wireless router, to which you connect to wirelessly. It could be that your neighbour is using this connection to use the internet. You can put a WEP key on your router so you need it to connect to it. As for the recent searches and music? That can only be done if the person had actually been using YOUR computer. There is no way to dump music onto your computer. It could be that (like in Mozilla Firefox) your browser automatically comes up with different searches that it thinks may be relevant to you. Judging by your info, i dont think you have anything to worry about. If you ARE on a wireless connection, just check that you have a WEP key on your channel :)
  5. For 1 this sounds like that you are finding this on your personal PC, not that you are sharing a Modem or internet connection??? If that is true, either you need to password protect your login ID ( under 'users' in control panel ) by editing your profile and add a password. This can also be stepped up by creating a startup password, this won't even get into windows to the login ID without the password. You do this by pressing F2 or whatever to get into BIOS, and setup a password. Lastly, the other thing that you need to do, is make sure that the computer does not save your passwords, and prompts you to login all the time. Many sites now-a-days will remember your login ( by cookies ) and login automatically whenever you go to that site. Someone is probably just starting up your PC and going to the same web sites you are, and they get in because it remembers your login, and bypasses all the security... The quickest thing to do before changing all the other stuff, is open up options in IE. and delete all history and files ( including cookies ) and then they can't get there !!! Good luck...
  6. Hi, this is what u should do. First of all disable system restore, and visit http://onecare.live.com and run their free scan for viruses, trojans, spyware, registry errors and other security problems. After this is done u put a password on ur wireless router meaning no one can use ur wireless connection if they don't have a password. Since all routers are differrent so u should check ur routers documentation for setting a password. Next step u should do is password protection ur computer's account. After that I recommend u remove all ur installed security software and download these. AVG Anti-virus: http://free.grisoft.com Spybot: http://www.download.com Comodo Firewall: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com All these softwares are the best of their kind and r absolutely free!! Now last step is to run another security check on ur pc using these tools above, and re-enable system restore and create a check point. I hope this helps, and u can contact me for any more help. Good Luck and Take care!
  7. if you are using a wireless connection than you will want to get thru your settings and change your password (dont use default password). get windows up todate get your anti-virus up todate and do a full scan get a good firewall zonealarm www.zonelabs.com
  8. I think someone other than you is using your computer. Or anybody take one wire from your internet connection and make another way to let it pass to him. And maybe this is a trojan virus(it can control your computer) Or it's a program for controlling computers if this person have your computer IPs. To Remove this trojan. Download Nod32(It's excellent for TROJANS)
  9. If they are using your computer, a simple deterrant is to put a cmos password on your machine and leave your machine off. To access your cmos, it occurs at startup. Then put a password on your screen saver. You can do this through control panel/display/screensaver. This should take care of most things. It is a tough balancing act of finding enough security on your machine but not too much where it takes longer to get in.
  10. Sounds like you need a firewall to protect your system.
