How do I stop people from piggybacking off my signal? Please read the details provided.?
I have some sort of antenna (WiFi?) that has a wire that (almost look likes a phone line) plugs into my ethernet plug on the back of my tower. Theres no router in my home. I recently got a new computer with Windows Vista and I mapped the network that it said was there and it showed my comp. with my name and two other computers that showed their names (example. Jeffs-PC) with IP addresses. It showed their switches going to mine on the mapped network with my switch leading to the internet connection. Are they piggybacking off my signal even though I dont have a router in my home or is this even something I should be concerned about? If so how can I stop it? Im not too familiar with networking. The antenna is outside of my home. Its not DSL of Cable internet.

- Yes, they are piggybacking. You need a router so you can install WEP/WPA or a security protocol to stop the piggy backing
- It showed their switch going to yours? but you don't have a "switch or router"? Sounds like it's showing you other DSL users who have windows neighborhood enabled. Turn on Windows Firewall, and you'll be ok.
- It sounds like your DSL/cabel modem may be inetgrated into the router. Can you access the (probablt 2wire) box ( the thingy with the antenna and wire coming out of it? If they are not piggybacking your internet feed they are most certainly getting access to your machine via WiFi. As someone else has answered, you need to implement at least WEP or other type of security. Your ISP should have directions on-line on how to set most of this up. Good Luck.
