Downloading games and stuff when piggyBacking on a wireless signal?

my cousin is piggy backing, he lives with us. But the signal is c oming from somewhere in the neighborhood. Well if i were him, i wouldn't use it, but he insists. And one of the things he wants internet for mainly is for downloading songs, programs etc. lots of downloading. What happens if he does? from what i have read in the net, seems nothing happens cause police doesn't even care.. and there's no way for them to find out Oh so he can get caught?? Well i told him, but he says "everyone does it so it's ok".. He also doesn't know about computers, and it's his first computer ever.. and he doesn't want to listen to me

  1. Tricky one. I personally think people who don't bother to setup protection (very easy to do), deserve to be hacked and freeloaded from. However, if the resident ever cottons on someone's piggybacking and can trace it to you it's not worth the hassle. Getting your own connection will also give a better signal.
  2. what makes you think there's no way for them to find out? the MAC address of your cousin's network card will be all over the router logs of the person who's connection he's using, alongside times, dates, websites visited etc. and that MAC address is unique to his network card. add a directional antenna into the equation and i dare say the wireless signal being given off by his pc can be narrowed down to your house fairly easily.
