Opening a Joint Account online?

I am trying to open a joint account without having to go into a bank for a 45 minute (at least) appoint ment with my husband. He works away during the week and (here in remote-ish Scotland) the banks are shut on Saturdays. I would send in any amount of ID and we both have several other accounts (neither of our banks is helpful enough to accommodate our needs), as well as good credit ratings. Neither of us are anything other than permanent UK residents with jobs - I'd just like a more sensible option if anyone knows of a bank who will accept our business without asking to see both of us? We already exist in the banking/tax etc world so I really can't understand the insistence upon our both being present!

  1. for a joint account you nearly always have to go to the bank.......its crap but its the only way. our appointment lasted about half an hour
  2. You have to go there, there is no way around it. How do they know you are you if you just send in your I.D? It could be anyone who sent in your ID, theft identification is a big issue these days, so youre better off going in and just getting it done. Banks are quite the butt heads these days, but they are just trying to protect people
  3. They can't do that. It would be to easy for bad guys to rope someone into a joint account with them who had money, then be entitled legally to that money. Also, here in the U.S., the Patriot Act has placed even further restrictions on opening new accounts without practically having a DNA sample. lol. The bad guys screw it up for everybody.
  4. I used to work at a bank and to deal with situations like yours, I had the person open as individual then give forms for the person to change it to joint. But then every bank is different in terms of regulations when it comes down to it.
