Can UK employers check overseas credit ratings?

Applying for a job with a UK bank. I am Irish and had some difficulty with my overdraft awhile ago back home. Can they check this?

1. they might be able to, but i wouldn't worry about it if it's ok now and in the clear. My husband worked for a bank in the UK, we were up to our eyeballs in debt (but able to pay it) and also had problems with previous overdraft, but he was able to get and stay in the job.
