do cellphone companies check credit score if you buy your phone and plan online?

when i go to verizon or cingular online and if i wanna buy a cellphone online fo they check credit score?

1. yes they do. If your credit score is too low, theyll ask you to put down a deposit in order to open an account. The deposit is usually $500 dollars.
2. Yes they do check, however depending on your credit, heres what we are talking. (BTW I work for Att) if you are 18-25 with NO credit its normally $125-175 depending on location, 18-22 with decent credit, no prior problems in credit, $50-75, or 22+ with decent or great credit, there is normally no deposit charge, but dont let that deposit scare you it actually works in your favor, after a year of paying your bill on time, the deposit money is credited to future bill statements.
3. i have heard of deposits as high as a thousand bucks. the iphone created alot of 'deposits' during activation process.
