Do foreigners living in the US have credit ratings?

I just moved here to the US for college since last August, and I wanna know if I have credit ratings so that I can borrow money....do I actually have a credit rating (I have a social security number), and if I do, how will I be able to check it? Will I be able to participate in social lending networks such as prosper.com?

  1. Nobody has a credit rating until they build one, no matter if you are a US native, or a foreigner. You can start building credit slowly like everyone else - getting a cell phone in your name, utility bills, etc. Take good care of your credit, and within a matter of a couple of years, your score will reflect that, and enable you to make larger purchases on credit (such as cars, and eventually property if you want).
  2. you can build one through the military there are some guys from Kuwait that have to many cards most already maxed out
