If I dispute inquires on my credit, will the credit bureau automatically take it off or will they investigate?
I have a TON of inquires on my credit and I heard if you dispute them they will take them off. Will they go real deep into it or will they just remove them with no questions asked?

- You heard wrong.
- They won't do JackShit, the bureaus specialize in making people look bad so that their affiliated banks can gouge you with higher interest (it's how they get paid) the only thing they will do is that which is required by law, and removing inquiries, ain't one of em.
- Inquiries hurt less as time goes on. If those are the only "baddies" on your report, then I wouldn't even bother with the inquiries. Disputing inquiries can also have unintended consequences. , such as having a fraud alert added to your report (after all, it *must* be fraud if you didn't initiate those inquiries ;) ).
- sorry it does not work that way -- only time will remove most of the stuff you are referring too!!
- They will investigate. If it is unfounded, they will remove it. There are 2 different types of inquiries. The ones where you apply for a loan/credit, affect your credit score. (I believe these are referred to as "hard" hits). The ones where a 3rd party checks to see if they want to send you a "you've been Prue-approved" offer are "soft" hits and do not affect your credit score. If you want to stop the "you've been pre-approved" junk mail -- you can opt out. This will prevent these companies from seeing your credit info. It' cuts your junk mail down a whole lot. To opt out and remove your name from the lists these pre-approved offers are based on, call 1-888-5optout (888-567-6866). There is no fee to opt out.
- It depends on if the inquiries are legit. If there is an inquiry on there from a company that you have never dealt with, then yes, challenge it. It could be an indicator of (attempted) ID theft. I would also call that company (usually a contact # appears beside the company's name) and ask many questions. The bureaus have 30 days to investigate any discrepancies on your report. Also, inquiries more than 2 years old should not appear on your report. If they do, ask that they be removed.
- Are these inquiries soft pulls or hard pulls? Hard pull=any thing you signed for to get credit Soft pull=inquiries that do not hurt your score or affect your credit in any way. Credit reporting agencies sell limited info about you to credit card and insurance companies so these companies can send you offers in the mail. If it's a genuine hard pull, the only way it will come off is if it was an illegal pull on your report. If someone checked your credit report without your permission that would be illegal. If you dispute this, they will investigate. Also, checking your own report, or using a service to do it for you such as truecredit, will not affect your score. Inquiries stay on your report for 2 years then fall off.
