Tell them, "Cease and desist" and hang up the phone. While it is TRUE that having credit allows you to build credit, such as with the suggestion above of small credit purchases, it is also true that every application for credit is a negative hit on your credit score by itself. So, apply for and use credit sparingly. Also, having the same address for over two years will improve your score, as will paying your utility bills on time in some states.
