- obtain a credit report on yourself, there may be something on your flat. it may just be credit scoring
- It's possibly because you have so little debt that there's not enough credit activity to judge whether you'd be a reliable payer - strangely they like to see some activity rather than little! Here's a site that gives quite good information on obtaining your credit report and also some free credit report offers from the main providers. http://www.readycreditgo.co.uk/ID.html Are you registered on the electoral roll? If not then get registered ASAP as this can make a big difference. Ideally your file will show you settled for more than 7 months in your current address, with a landline telephone number, approx 3-5 credit searches a year on your file (where you've applied for credit although not within a matter of days or hours of each other) and 3-4 active debts such as credit cards, loans etc that you are paying off regularly. If you want to build a credit file, it's almost worth applying for a credit card and paying it off in full every month just so you can be seen as a reliable person to lend or give credit to. If you've been refused credit by the phone company directly, try going to a reseller like Carphone Warehouse. They have different credit checking procedures and sometimes will allow you to pay a deposit as a safeguard. I would strongly advise you to get a copy of your credit file just in case there is anything untoward on your file that you haven't been responsible for so you can get it cleared up.
