where to check free credit score safely?
Public Comments
- This is the government mandated website where you can get 1 free credit report from the 3 agencies for free in one year: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp The federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires that U.S. consumers be entitled to a free credit report each year. The government’s goal is to make sure that consumers stay informed, fight identity theft, and get fair treatment. For credit score, you can go to http://www.myfico.com/ or use any of the 3 credit bureaus (e.g. Experian)
- For your credit/FICO score try www.myfico.com Just cancel before the trial period ends. I did this and had no problems. FICO score: 805.
- The Federal Govt. allows two free credit checks yearly including scores try www.fedgovt.creditreports.org
- You are entitled to a free credit report each year. Write to Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Send them a letter requesting a copy of your credit report and enclose you full name, address, date of birth and SS # and a self address envelope. All 3 will send you a free report.
- You can get your official score from each of the 3 reporting companies. These companies have set up a 1-800 number where you can ask to recieve one over the phone. Do not trust any free credit report sites except those officially authorized by the Federal Trade Commission which include the 3 main companies that compile your credit score (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion). My source includes official government information regarding free credit reports and how to get one. It doesn't make sense to trust other credit reporting sites when you can get information officially from those that actually compile your credit score. "The law allows you to order one free copy of your report from each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies every 12 months."
